A well to do farmer in Europe would build 2 stories high. The bottom floor was for livestock. You lived on the top floor. A cow is a 2500 BTU/hour heater -- a barn full of animals did a lot to make the house more pleasant in winter. Yeah, you had some smells too.Leichtlehm was the typical construction through medieval up through the start of the industrial age. Buildings were timber frame. Timbers had less cutting than planks. The spaces between were temporarily boarded, then packed with straw that was moistened with a mix of clay and water. About a pound of clay to a gallon of water. So runny. You'd dip the straw in a tank of clay and water, let drain for a minute or two, then pack it between the boards. Do the bottom 2 feet of the wall. Get back to the start and raise the boards, and do the next layer.Some grain was left in the straw. Grain would sprout, and the plant would suck the water out of the wall, and bind the straw with it's roots. After the wall was dry (about 3 months) walls were plastered with lime and horsehair plaster, or lime and flax plaster. Sometimes the top coat would have pig or cow blood mixed in. The protein from the blood would make the surface more resistant to erosion from rain. It also gave the plaster a pink cast to it.

I'm exploring primitive shelter building in northern cool temperate climates. I mean primitive as a compliment: the prime, first, original, indigenous, low-tech/base-tech. Things like the Haudenosaunee or Viking Longhouse seem to be the most 'standard' approach to cold climate primitive shelter building: half-cylindrical structures with steep roofs and gable venting.

I'd like to build a small-scale (12'x10'x10') version of this type of structure using locally available materials that are common to the Adirondack foothills. What types of woods have been used in northern climates historically? What trees did Haudenosaunee people build their longhouses with?

In this region there's an abundance of red spruce, balsam fir, sugar maple, red maple, and diseased (thus small diameter) American beech; some eastern hemlock, red pine, and white pine; and small patches of northern white cedar. I'm not sure any of these are suitable for "long-term" shelter builds (relative for primitive shelters, not a short-term debris hut).

Masonry wasnt my favourite homebuilding material when I got involved in building and renovation back in the mid-1980s. However, 30 years of dealing with reality has changed my mind. Brick veneer, in particular, offers the best combination of quality and economy of any exterior building material I know of in Canada, and there are specific points I mention to people who come to me looking for construction and renovation advice.Brick veneer is the most common way brick is used in modern Canadian home building and it works as part of stud frame construction. A single layer of brick is installed on the outside face of exterior wall frames, with an air space between the brick and the frame. Insulation is installed within the frame, with drywall or other finished surfaces created on the interior face as usual.The first thing about brick veneer is that it retains its good looks longer and with far less maintenance than any other exterior building material. The difference is huge.Where its common to see dents, scratches, holes and mould growth on other exterior wall options over time, brick veneer just sits there and keeps on looking good, decade after decade. The only potential trouble with brick that Ive seen is flaking caused by the freeze-thaw cycles we get here in Canada. The thing is, its easy to avoid this trouble. Thats why its rare. Choose brick that meets CSA Standard A82-06 and install brick no closer to the ground than 6 and youll be fine.Not many people realize that true brick veneer also offers energy advantages for a home because it adds thermal mass to the structure. On a hot day, the transmission of excess heat to wall frames and insulation is reduced and slowed because it takes time for the brick to warm up. Conversely, it also takes longer for the low temperatures of a frosty Canadian night to penetrate the brick and draw heat out of your home. The more you can protect the insulated wall frame of your house from wide swings in temperature, the better that insulation will work.
